New roof and a flooded basement.

In early March we were planning a trip to visit Brian's sister, her husband and our Niece. The weekend before we left I walked into our office and notice that the papers on our desk had been wet at some point so I asked Brian if he spilled some water in there. He said no so we were wondering why if had looked like the papers were wet. Well low and behold we looked up to our ceiling to find a crack and water spots! So we walked upstairs into our guest room and into the crawl space in the back corner and saw that our roof was leaking. It was not a fun Saturday. We placed a tarp up there to stop the water from leaking into the first floor and called about 5 roofers to get bids on a new roof. We picked the roofing company we like the best and signed the contract (bye bye tax refund)! They started the roof the first week in April and finished a few days later. It looks great and we notice a huge difference. Up until getting the new roof put on we never notice that our roof was very orange!! The shingle color is a mix of charcoal gray, red, and black. It looks wonderful! We paid the roofer this week on Wednesday and had our first mini home disaster behind us (phew).

Little did we know that the roof was the least of our worries as far as home disasters go. We woke up on Thursday morning to 4 inches of standing water in our basement!
Turns out our drain that goes from our house to the street was clogged. Mix a clogged drain with a running toilet all night and you get 4 inches of water in your basement! So we spent the first 2 hours waiting for the plumber scooping the standing water out of the basement. They plumber was here for 3 hours and after that we started sucking the carpet dry, 2 days later it is still damp. We ended up pulling the carpet back and ripping the padding out since it was just acting like a sponge. We laid the carpet back down and vacuumed as much water out as we could. We now have 6 fans, a dehumidifier, and a hepa filter running down there and it is starting to dry out. So we almost have our second and hopefully last mini home disaster behind us. Oh, the joys of home ownership!
